Rules and the law
What the law requires of learner drivers in Great Britain, and where providers are stricter than the law.
Two sets of rules apply and you need both to be satisfied. The law sets the floor: insurance, L plates, a supervisor of at least 21 who has held a full licence for three years, and no motorways except with an approved instructor. Providers then add their own conditions on top, and at least one requires a supervisor aged 25.
Guides
Do learner drivers need their own insurance?Yes. Anyone driving on a public road in Great Britain must be insured on that vehicle, provisional licence included. During lessons with an approved instructor you are normally covered by the school's policy. For private practice you are not, and you need your own.GuideThe rules for learner drivers and insuranceIn Great Britain a learner must be insured on the car, display L plates, and be supervised by someone at least 21 who has held a full licence for that vehicle type for three years.
