L learners insurance

Short-term learner insurance on your own car

Tempcover and Dayinsure both cover a learner's own car on short-term policies. The condition to watch is that the very shortest durations are often only available on a car that already has an annual policy on it.

The condition nobody leads with

Short-term learner cover on your own car is available, but the cheapest headline durations frequently are not.

Both Dayinsure and Aviva state that cover from one day applies only to cars that are already insured on an annual policy, and that otherwise the minimum policy length is longer. Cuvva goes further: your own car is only covered at all if there is an underlying annual policy behind it.

The person this hurts is precisely the person searching for it. You have bought a car to learn in. It has no insurance. You find a one-day policy at an attractive price. You cannot have it.

What does work

Doing the sum

Short-term cover is priced per period, so the comparison against an annual policy is simply how many periods you will buy. GoShorty publishes indicative figures on its own page: around £15 for an hour and around £25 for a day, as published on 18 September 2026.

Take those as the starting prices they are. But the arithmetic is instructive: at roughly £25 a day, ten days of practice is £250, and at that point a longer policy is worth pricing properly rather than assuming short-term is the cheap option.

The DVSA reckons the average learner needs 22 hours of private practice. Priced by the hour, that is not a small number.
