Insurance on a provisional licence
Everything a provisional licence holder needs to know about getting insured, and which providers accept which ages.
You cannot drive on a public road on a provisional licence without insurance on that specific car, and there is no learner exemption. What changes is how you get it: your own policy, someone else's, or short-term cover bought as you go. The filter that rules providers out fastest is age, and it is published, so it is worth checking before you spend an evening entering details.

Insurance on a provisional licence, explainedIf you hold a provisional licence and drive on a public road in Great Britain, you must be insured on that specific car. You can get that cover three ways: your own learner policy, being added to someone else's insurance, or short-term cover bought by the hour or day.GuideCar insurance for a provisional driverA provisional driver can be insured either as the policyholder on their own learner policy, or as a named driver on somebody else's. Which is cheaper depends almost entirely on how many hours you will actually drive.Guide
