How to add a learner driver to insurance

Contact your existing insurer, give the learner's licence number, date of birth and how long they have held their provisional, and ask to add them as a named driver. Expect an admin fee and a small premium change.

What you need to hand

The steps

1. Log in to your insurer's account area, or call them. Do not go to a comparison site: this is a mid-term change to a policy you already hold 2. Ask to add a named driver, and say clearly that they hold a provisional licence 3. Check what you are quoted covers what you need, including whether the learner can drive without you in some circumstances (usually they cannot, and must not) 4. Check the admin fee. It is often between £0 and £30 5. Get the change in writing before anybody drives

Before you confirm, ask these

Does this affect my no-claims bonus if they claim? The answer is yes, and it is worth hearing the insurer say it.

Will my renewal quote carry it? Also yes, typically for five years, whether or not you stay with them.

Can I remove them the day they pass? Usually, and you may get a partial refund. Worth knowing, because a newly qualified driver on your policy is a very different risk from a supervised learner and the premium reflects it.

The alternative, in one line

A separate learner policy in their name costs more per month and keeps your no-claims bonus entirely out of it. The full comparison of the routes is here, and every provider is on the same columns here.
